It’s an homage to “Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?”. You’re a private detective in Singapore in the year 2032, hunting down a serial killer. But you also have to run your business.
Chinatown Detective Agency
At the start of 2018, Mark Fillon, from General Interactive, invited me to make the pixel art for “Chinatown Detective Agency”. With a little more experience, I tried to work in a different style using what I learned from Future Flashback.
On this project, I was able to expand my knowledge by doing the color correction and lighting inside of the Unity 3D engine.
The project was successfully funded in a Kickstarter campaign, reaching several stretch goals. The game is planned to be released in 2021.
The Characters
Chinatown Detective Agency is a story-driven game. Though most of the game will see you pursuing a lot of subplots, the main plot links the game’s characters, locations and events together. This is a story of a gumshoe chasing down a malign individual with evil intentions – simple in structure, but potentially complex in the way it unravels.
In the game you play Amira Darma, a private investigator that opened Chinatown Detective Agency in a small 2nd floor office on Eu Tong Sen Street.
Then there’s Superintendent Justin Koh, one of the Criminal Investigation Department’s most senior officers and a former mentor of Amira’s during her junior years.
Rupert Zhou is a shadowy figure. He’s a fixer for some of Singapore’s most powerful men and women, and a steady source of work for Amira.
The Backgrounds
The backgrounds are essential to tell the story of Amira around the world. They give the cinematic feeling for the storytelling.
Because of the importance of the backgrounds, I choose to work in a bigger resolution than usual, so we can add more details and storytelling to the art.
And, to evolve the concept of modern pixel art, we are using color-correction, post-processing and lighting inside of Unity 3D. The characters are directly affected by the lights.
And, as we have total control inside of the game engine, we can easily change the lighting and the mood for some scenes.
The World Is Yours
To help Amira solve the cases, you will have to travel to majors cities around the world and we are working hard to make them pretty, even when they are broken.
Here is a list of some of the locations that will be added to the game: Singapore, London, Osaka, Kuala Lumpur, Toronto, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Dubai, Mexico City, Ho Chi Minh City, Kigali, Athens, Hong Kong, Perth (Australia), Manila, Cairo, Seattle, Busan, Lima, Paris, New Delhi, and Jakarta.
Time Variation
On Chinatown Detective Agency, each of the main external locations is going to have 3 variations, based on the time of the day.
This will work as an environment mood for storytelling as well.

Graphical User Interface
The UI elements from the game got inspiration from the Carmen Sandiego games but were updated to give consistency to the CDA world. Please note that this is still a work in progress.
