Future Flashback

A new point and click puzzle adventure game, with incredible pixels and great music that clashes the 80’s vibe with new chiptune beats.

At the beginning  of 2017  Érico Porto invited me to make the art for a new point-and-click adventure game called Future Flashback. In fact at that time the project had only a codename [Memtrek].

This project was a huge responsibility for me as I was just starting studying pixel art. I made the backgrounds, the character design, user interface and animation.

I already finished all the art for it. We got more than 70 rooms/variations in the game. The team is fine-tuning the story and coding and we still hope to deliver it in 2020.

The Characters

The characters for this game were inspired by the Lucasfilm Games, specially Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantis.

Here you can take look at Gary, Sam and Kyle, our main character.

For the portraits I made a few sketches on different styles, initially in low-res, that evolved to pixel art to be consistent with the other graphic aspects of the game.

The Backgrounds

For the backgrounds, we choose to make a mix of old and futuristic places as, even in the future, there are nostalgic people.

They are largely inspired by the old adventure games but mixed with new tools available today. There’s no color limitation. The use of layers with blending modes allows better control of the lighting and color mood of the scene.

We can can this new kind of pixel art movement, that is not purist and mix the best of both eras,
Pixel Art 2.0.

The Brand

The name Future Flashback came after a brainstorm from the team and development from the story.

The idea for the logo came quickly after we decided the name of the game. As we got able to travel through memories, the icon of a play/rewind icon looked appropriate.

Our sneak peak into this world took us on a distinctly Blade Runner-esque point-and-click adventure. With short puzzles to solve based on clues embedded in each scene, the game promises to be far more than just a tale of a sad sci-fi man.

Future Flashback contains many different puzzles as well as a rich story. These puzzles are challenging, relying on clues you should remember or fragments of memories you need to find around you.
